How to tailor your CV for UK employers

Length, format, personal details and the one section most international applicants get wrong.

UK employers read a lot of CVs quickly. A few conventions make yours easier to say yes to.

Keep it to two pages

For most roles, two A4 pages is the norm. Graduates can often fit everything on one. Senior and academic CVs can run longer, but every line should earn its place.

Leave out personal details you don't need

UK CVs don't include a photo, date of birth, marital status, nationality or a full address. A town or city, phone number, email and LinkedIn URL are enough. If you need sponsorship, it's fine to state your right-to-work status clearly in one line.

Lead with impact, not duties

Recruiters want to know what changed because you were there. Instead of "Responsible for supplier management", try "Renegotiated 12 supplier contracts, cutting annual costs by 8%".

Mirror the job advert's language

Many employers use applicant tracking systems. Use the same terms the advert uses for the skills you genuinely have, and keep formatting simple: no text boxes, tables for layout, or images.

Add a short profile

Three or four lines at the top that say who you are, what you're great at and what you're looking for. Tailor it for each application.
